Kholoud Azrak is a mother of five and the owner of Azrak Cake. She began baking when she first became a mom, but her cakes would either sink in the middle or not rise at all. She decided to learn how to bake as a challenge for herself. Although her formal education is in accounting, her growing passion and love for baking prompted her to take baking courses. When she moved to Canada, four years ago, the supportive friends she made here tasted her work and encouraged her to open her own business. In 2020, she completed a food handling course and launched her own baking business, Azrak Cake.
Kholoud comes from a Syrian background, where fruits such as cherries, peaches, and berries are seasonal fruits that are magical to Syrians. Making these delightful fruits an integral part of her work helped her keep the taste of her culture and sense of her homeland close to her daily life. In her native country, the layalina cake is a well-known dessert that is unique in both its appearance and flavour. Making and selling this delicious dessert significantly contributed to the popularity of her business.
Khouloud’s work is not only influenced by Syria, but also by other Middle Eastern countries. Being born in Dubai and raised in Syria, she was exposed to a wide range of new cultures and flavours that she now incorporates into her baking, along with memories of traveling to Bahrain, Qatar, and Egypt. One of her main aspirations for the future is to open her own bakery, where she can serve her community cakes and treats that she makes with all her effort and love.
