  Domestic Violence in Immigrant Communities: Case Studies (Arabic)

  This document contains excerpts from the book Domestic Violence in Immigrant Communities: Case Studies by Dr. Ferzana Chaze, Dr. Bethany Osborne, Ms. Archana Medhekar and Dr. Purnima George that have been translated into Arabic so that a wider audience can access them. The book is a freely accessible educational resource to be used in training with social work and legal practitioners.

  The translated case studies in this document are real life stories of immigrant women who have experienced domestic violence in Canada. The cases emerged from closed legal case files handled by Archana Medhekar Law Office and reflect the stories of racialized immigrant women who experienced domestic violence in Canada and who sought legal help. Permission to carry out this research was received from the Research Ethics Board of both Ryerson University and Sheridan College in June 2019. All cases included in this research took place within the past ten years and were closed for at least one year prior to the start of the research.

  In addition to the case studies, included are questions for discussion with community groups on the topic of domestic violence. We hope you will find this tool useful as you engage your communities on issues around domestic violence.

  Domestic Violence in Immigrant Communities: Case Studies

  “Domestic Violence in Immigrant Communities: Case Studies” is a freely accessible eCampus Ontario Pressbook containing case studies of immigrant women experiencing domestic violence to be used as educational materials. The contents were created by analysing closed legal case files of 15 immigrant women living in Ontario who experienced domestic violence. The comprehensive case studies that emerged from this research present domestic violence experienced by immigrant women in all its complexity, highlighting their unique vulnerability at the intersections of race, gender and immigration status. The book also highlights the different legal processes that these women encounter in seeking justice and the challenges they face in relation to re-establishing their own lives and the lives of their children. In addition to the cases, the book contains questions for reflection; a description of legal processes involved in DV cases, and a glossary of the terms used throughout the case studies. This interactive Pressbook is an ideal resource for social work and legal practitioners, including students in social service work, social work and law programs, in order to increase their understanding about the complexity of domestic violence cases in immigrant families and develop strategies for culturally informed interventions.

  La violence domestique (conjugale) dans les communautés immigrantes: étude de cas» est un recueil de presse d'eCampus Ontario en libre accès comprends des études de cas d'immigrantes victimes de violence conjugale à utiliser comme matériel pédagogique. Le livre met en évidence la complexité de la violence conjugale dans les communautés d'immigrants et les différents processus juridiques auxquels ces femmes font face pour entamer la justice et les défis auxquels elles sont confrontées pour refaire leur vie et celle de leurs enfants. Ce livre contient également des questions de réflexion; une description des processus juridiques dans le contexte de la violence domestique (conjugale) et un lexique relatif aux études de cas.
