Abstract

The rapid growth in the area of AI technology has presented many unique opportunities in the realm of healthy aging regarding older adults. However, their perspective on the topic is largely underexplored. This study explores the concerns, attitudes and perspectives of older adults 60 years and above pertaining to the application of AI technologies and the role it plays (or can play) in supporting healthy aging. To gain these perspectives, 15 qualitative semi-structured interviews with older adults took place, each lasting 30 minutes. The findings suggest that older adults favour personalization and simplicity when it comes to the use of AI technologies. Participants stressed the need for user-friendly and tailored solutions that address their specific health concerns and daily living challenges, such as medication reminders, personalized health tracking, and cognitive aids. Participants also identified an interest in education and workshops as crucial for empowering older adults to when it comes to navigate AI technologies effectively and safely. However, concerns regarding trust, privacy, and relevance to their unique aging experiences were also mentioned. This study helps to expand the growing body of knowledge surrounding the development of user-centered AI by highlighting the importance of the diverse needs, experiences, challenges and expectations of older adults. Understanding these perspectives is key for developers and policymakers who aim to create inclusive AI solutions that enhance the quality of life for aging populations.
