Abstract
This study explores the implementation of universal design principles in residential settings for older adults, focusing on enhancing independence, safety, and comfort. The central research question examines how universal design principles can be successfully implemented in such environments and the barriers caregivers and older adults face. Using a quantitative methodology, the research gathers data through surveys targeting caregivers and older adults in diverse living arrangements. The survey addresses key themes, including caregiving roles, familiarity with universal design, and the challenges of implementing accessible modifications. Findings reveal significant barriers, such as limited awareness of universal design principles, financial constraints, and the underrepresentation of rural caregiving challenges. While home modifications like ramps and grab bars are valued for improving safety, the adoption of these tools is often hindered by affordability, time constraints, and cultural influences. The study emphasizes the importance of engaging older adults in decision making and providing caregivers with tools and training to enhance their roles. This research is relevant to policymakers, designers, and caregivers, highlighting the need for culturally sensitive, adaptable, and accessible solutions. It underscores the importance of collaboration between stakeholders to promote aging in place and improve the quality of life for older adults while reducing caregiver burdens.
