Abstract

This study examines the impact of family homelessness on community development in Ontario, Canada, focusing on its detrimental effects on social cohesion, financial security, and overall well- being. Family homelessness is linked to greater social isolation, unstable finances, and long-term developmental challenges for children. Using an ethnographic survey approach, data were collected from 75 participants in high-homelessness areas, emphasizing lived experiences, support systems, and barriers. Findings reveal systemic issues, including housing affordability and inadequate social supports, with service providers calling for targeted interventions and inclusive housing policies. While providing valuable insights, the study is limited by its focus on urban Ontario, potentially excluding diverse experiences from other regions and populations, such as veterans or individuals with mental health issues. Future research should explore intersectional factors, compare family homelessness to other forms, and examine its long-term impacts, particularly on children.Policy recommendations emphasize addressing structural causes like poverty and housing shortages, while prioritizing tailored support services for homeless families. Initiatives fostering community engagement could reduce stigma and enhance cohesion. Service providers are urged to adopt holistic strategies, incorporating job training, education, and mental health care.Preventing family homelessness requires building a resilient, inclusive society through collaborative, evidence- based interventions that strengthen community development and reduce homelessness nationwide.
