Description
In this session, we will analyze the focus group methodology and outline best practices for data collection in a virtual context. Considerations around group dynamics, visual cues, and bias will be discussed using a comparative approach of in-person and virtual focus groups. In addition to adapting focus group practices and procedures from in-person to online, there are new aspects to take into account; video-conferencing tools and technological considerations, including issues with connectivity, distractions and privacy concerns are factors that need to be accounted for when conducting focus groups virtually. The focus of the presentation will be on best practices prior to; at the beginning of; during; and, after the focus group session. The role of the facilitator, notetaker, and facilitation techniques will also be addressed. Participants in the session will be able to recognize the differences when facilitating or participation in online versus in-person focus groups and take away practical tips and strategies in order to conduct online focus groups.
