Recurring John: A Song Cycle
What is the impact of a life?
A mother sings a lullaby to her child. A teacher imparts 'wordly wisdom' upon a student. A tired lawyer eagerly awaits the chance for a promotion. A man recounts his emotional journey on his wedding day. A homeless park dweller fondly recounts the lives of passersby. These disparate lives are bound together by the common thread of having been touched and impacted by the same person. This song cycle explores the impact of one life through presenting vignettes of individuals affected by the titular John, who never himself appears in the piece.
Recurring John was originally presented in concert at the SummerWorks Festival (Musical Works in Concert) in 2014, and subsequently premiered at the Chicago Musical Theatre Festival in 2015.

The Preposterous Predicament of Polly Peel
As Polly teaches us: perhaps when confronted with the UNimaginable, imagination is the greatest form of courage…
The Preposterous Predicament of Polly Peel explores tragedy through the eyes of a young girl. Inspired by the 1891 painting The Young Biologist by Canadian artist Paul Peel, this musical highlights the power of a child’s imagination and the process of grieving.
This 30-minute version of The Preposterous Predicament of Polly Peel was originally commissioned by The Musical Stage Company, Toronto ON.
Mitchell Marcus, Artistic & Managing Director Robert McQueen, Director of New Musical Development*
A subsequent full-length version of this piece was commissioned by The Musical Stage Company with funding from the Aubrey & Marla Dan Fund for New Musicals.
The Preposterous Predicament of Polly Peel is produced by permission of the Playwright and Marquis Literary (Colin Rivers) MQlit.ca
