Students in the 2016 General Education elective Canada in the Making: Understanding Canadian History researched and produced public history posters on various aspects of Canada’s military past. The central purpose of public history is to disseminate historical information to as wide an audience as possible, inspire interest in the past and raise the historical consciousness of the general public. In particular, public history posters are a useful tool to outline complex historical subjects in a form that is clear, concise and easily digested. At their best, posters tell a great story and spark a thirst for further study amongst the audience. Under the guidance of History faculty members Christian Knudsen, Mauro Marsella and Peter Kikkert, the students designed the posters in groups, created separate summaries and bibliographies, and then gave a short presentation on their topics in class.
