This semester our community partner was Egypt Migrations, a not-for-profit organization focused on migrant experiences in Canada from Egypt and the entire MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. This organization archives, documents, and shares these experiences through a number of avenues. Student groups in the class largely worked with the video and oral history interviews as the basis for their project as they built an ArcGIS StoryMap. The groups were tasked with comparing immigrant experiences from Egypt Migrations with two other immigrant groups around a specific theme. They were asked to research and examine how their particular theme both helped and hindered immigrants as they sought a new life in Canada. How did there theme help them remember their homes while simultaneously making a new home here? This was a challenging project, with lots of self-directed archival and secondary source research. I am proud of the projects my students have created.
